If the battery is DEAD it wont even move a charge. If it wont start on a jump, time to get a new one, IMO.
You are starting off the secondary battery, not the first. The jumper cables hook directly to the battery cables thus providing voltage to the system just like the actual battery would. You are hooking them up in parallel not series.
