New GMRS are 5 watt with 18 mile range. That degrades pretty quick with trees and buildings, but in general most racetracks are relatively open, and even with a 1/4 - 1/5 degredation, thats more than enough to get you around every racetrack in the country.
pair them up with a motorcycle headset with PTT button mounted on the steering wheel and it should, at least in concept, make for an economical radio set up. Not as bulletproof as yours no doubt, but a lot less money!
