If you're trained to respond in a certain way you're just going to respond.
In a confrontation people will react in different ways under different circumstances. So for instance, if the assailants just jumped out of the car and came at him he might have immediately gone into fight mode.
If he was walking and people jumped out from 15 ft away pointing weapons and yelling at him to lay down he probably would've laid down.
Whether someone fights, flees, or surrenders depends on what you present them with and how they are trained. Point a gun at the average person at point blank range and they'll freeze. Point a gun at someone who has extensive combat training at point blank range and the attacker may end up getting gouged, stabbed, choked, and/or shot with their own gun.
