My Take:
MR2
Pros
-Mid Engined RWD, the perfect combination
-Toyota reliability
-Pretty nimble
-Not too expensive
Cons
-Not as many aftermarket options
-A little on the heavy side for its size
-Will go through rear tires a bit quicker
-Pain in the ass engine bay
-Very little storage room
Miata
Pros
-Lighter
-Many, many more produced
-You can sell it to an aspiring Spec Miata racer one day
-Healthy aftermarket
Cons
-You will have to add a roll bar/cage
-You may have to find a much coveted hard top. Doing so may require sexual favors and/or homicide
The least hassle to get started will be the MR2. Aside from the roll bar and hard top issue I'd take the Miata.
