wow, back from the dead
figured I'd update this thread, since I actually got somewhere with this car and I'm pretty sure it's gonna stick with me for a while. Quick update:
Decided not to pursue the GRM challenge, Although my actual monetary output so far has been pretty low (most of the expensive stuff came from Rex's car :-) ), I'd still be out of the budget.
Finished conversion from automatic to manual transmission; took a while to get it started though
Installed KYB AGX shocks from Rex's red 240 (which makes this the 3rd car they were installed on) with TEIN S-tech springs.
Upgraded to 300zx brakes all around with stainless steel lines
Put in J30 LSD
Put a newer (green) door on the passenger side b/c the wire for the window regulator snapped,
Swapped in S14 seats and Canadian-spec seatbelts
Rolled the fenders and switched over to wheels from a TT 300zx
Swapped over to a fresher KA engine (recently compression tested at 173/175/173/165) b/c older one had leaking valve stem seals. Dynoed at 129 hp and 132 torque.
Weighed in a 2677 w/o driver

877 miles of track abuse and still as reliable as ever
