Righto, if I do not believe god is a person, a single being, or anything definable, I wouldn't have to capitalize it, right?

It doesn't matter if you believe in God as a person or individual. If you are referring to the entity being written about above, who is clearly an individual from the text's point of view, and who's name happens to be "God", then you would capitalize it.

Your "penis" point falls flat, because penis isn't a proper noun. It isn't a concept. It's the name of a body part. Now, if you had a theory about, say, the relative size of penises based on a person's particular ability to argue over the internet, you would be able to call it the "Squabbling Penis Theory" and then it would be appropriate to capitalize.

Back to God: If you were going to write about the Greek Pantheon, you would say something like: "The Greek gods (small g) commonly worshipped included Zeus, Hera, Apollo and others." You capitalize their names because they are proper nouns -- it doesn't matter if you believe in them or not. To refer to a single entity, God ( big G, whether you believe in it or not) should be capitalized, as it is a proper noun -- A specific person, place, event, or thing.

Now, let's say there was a statue in Court Square of an enormous penis and it was called The Penis. Then it would be appropriate to capitalize, because it is a specific person, place, event, or thing. And, just to close, the reason you say "gods" with a small g is because gods is not a specific person, place, event or thing, whereas God (as in any diety singular in its existance) *is* a particular person, place, event, or thing.

So capitalize.
