One time a friend of mine and I drove a Ford Festiva to the junkyard in February with no windshield. It was our field car, and it had lived a full and happy life chasing cows and being run into trees, flipped over, shot at (a. 300 Weatherby Mag will actually rock the car on its suspension) and was generally ready to die.
We got pulled over when a cop noticed we didn't have a windshield. We explained what we were doing (freezing our nuts off, for one) and he said that living our lives with that kind of stupidity was punishment enough and let us go.
