Yes the R33 and R34 were "refinements" on the R32...nothing radically different was added between generations, really just more electronic goodies like LCD dash display in the R34 etc....and more refinement...and weight. The R32 and R34 had the ability to manually switch from AWD to RWD with a switch on the console...the R33's ATTESA system didn't have this feature which didn't go over well with owners. I wouldn't be surprised if the Skyline gained even greater status and popularity from it's role in Japanese manga and videogames too.
I think, in essence, its like the Mustang over here....it may not have been the best performing stock, but its still wildly popular and has a huge fan base and aftermarket support.
