Shiv at Vishnu just made an add-on to his XEDE engine management system that automatically tunes your car all the time as you drive it. Basically from what I'm getting out of it, it's going to eliminate the need for a custom tune. It will make adjustments to your engine based on atmospheric conditions, temperature, gas quality, etc. to eliminate the possibility of knocking and maximize horsepower constantly. Pretty unbelievable.
Right now it's available for the EVO, but he's making a version for the WRX/STI
