The way I looked at cars, if they look like shit they generally are. I got a mint condition hatch with a motor and some other minor things done for $4k. All you have to do is look and be patient.
Good reasoning, although we differ a bit in what we are looking for. Part of this experience is putting in a motor myself (MM help included). I figure theres no better way to learn than to do that. Thus, the engine doesnt matter. The same goes for anything else. While I wouldn't mind a car that came w/shocks and springs, I am more than willing to buy something cheaper and do it myself. I want to learn about everything, and I figure this is the way to go about that.
Aesthetics (spelling?) such as mismatching wheels/paint dont matter to me, so forget about that. Im going to strip the inside soon enough so that also makes no difference. All im looking for is engine runs well (accordingly for age) enough. Mint would be nice, given.
However, you make a good point about the overall condition. If it does look like shit it probably was treated that way. \Ill definitly take a closer look. The one thing I dont want to do this summer is settle for something I dont want. I wont make that mistake with something as important as a car.
