a 3 week update:
put about 900 miles on it so far just wanting to drive it more every day and looking for excuses to do so.
Had a few issues addressed at Lindsay VW that i knew of when buying the car:
- passenger pull handle was broken (seems to be common with '19 Rs). fixed under warranty.
- ACC and LKAS aren't working due to a misaligned front camera. got the car back, but waiting to hear back from VW's warranty department. i fully expect for them to handle this one as the only way to fix it is to remove the windshield. to fix this they also need to recalibrate the ACC and LKAS sensors as well as an alignment (normally $700, but warranty). the rear camber was found to be out of spec, so i had them do an alignment. apparently the stock components are adjustable for camber up to -3.5* in the rear and -2.5* in the front, who knew? i'm not actually planning on using either feature much, but i just wanted to button up things i thought should be addressed.
Thinking more about the gloss black pretorias i'm planning on keeping them and not touching the color. i've found bronze and silver and hyper black examples on red GTIs and Rs and have not liked what i've seen so far. the gloss black does match well with the trim and tint. i'll get summer tires later and mount them on there; not in a huge rush to do this as the current tires are actually pretty good in terms of traction and tread life even if the E-Towns are noticeably heavier.
Having the rear doors is nice for daily use, however i do miss the long doors of the 2-door for arm position and peripheral view. The lack of a sunroof is not something i thought i'd miss and i don't. If i get the need for some extra lighting or wind i'll just drive the z3. The DCC is really nice: comfort with the family and responsiveness/feel when i'm alone with a press of a button. I'm still having the android auto issues, but i'm using that less and less anyway. i like covering up that area in front of the shifter since i don't need to run a cord to the port behind the cover. The gearing feels taller in the lower gears when compared to the GTI and i think VW made it so that the top of 2nd is right at 60mph. Finally the grip in the wet and out of corners is silly; it just squats and goes. i've only been able to break the tires once and i could only tell by the flashing traction control light.
