I've spent time in a 997. They aren't an air cooled Porsche, but they are fun to drive... and have things like power steering, air conditioning, and radios. Driving my dad's for a week was special in a way my 911 could never be. The physical dynamics was nothing like I'd driven before or since.
I think trying too hard is in the execution, provided you aren't driving a supercar. I've only been to three car shows in six years and I'm not tearing ass down the street or parking in Pike Place Market. Just go about your business and who gives a shit what anyone else thinks.
You are at the best time in your life to own a 911. It could also be nice when you're retired, but you have the least amount of responsibility you'll have for a loooong time, should you consider a family at some point.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
