Will it tho?  Thats my fear, that you never meet your heroes.  I've driven older 911's and 996's though.  

That, and I've never spent more than $26k on a car before.  Seems like a very 'adult' purchase that makes me uncomfortable.  Despite having a super nice house, a marriage, a respectable job, I'm still more comfortable showing up in a VW or operating on the fringes with a vintage honda motorcycle than a Porsche.  Maybe I'd just rather flaunt pink shirts than expensive things.  See signature for that, though, and that's another thread for another time.

I fired off another email for a 997 this morning, though.  There's also a high mile car locally on craigslist that's (relatively) dirt cheap that I might see if he's around this weekend.

i sincerely get all that.  i'm the same way.  buying the 4Runner made me pretty queasy but we justified it with planning to keep it for like 20 years.  our last 3 cars were never more than $18k and all used.

the 911's come a long way.  i think its very much an "experience" car...it'll be fast of course, but nothing else feels like one and from what i understand at this point in the car's development that's all in the best ways.

i think if you're considering TT RS's, S4 Avants and RS4s, and 968s you've already decided you can be cool with the hardware, if not the image.  to me the 997 is not a "try hard" car, its legit on its own merits and the rest is what you make of it.  i can understand not wanting to meet your heroes but this isn't a 40 year old beetle with a tractor shifter and trailing arm death geometry suspension anymore.
