Could it be they lost those members because they pushed a hard line "DO NOTHING" for decades and cultivated that attitude? You cannot separate member action from the NRA's previous behaviors, so they might actually be reaping what they sowed.
I'm a multi-gun owner and I absolutely believe the NRA is absolutely what we think they are. I'm not all THE NRA IS EVIL INCARNATE, but they're not social champions by any stretch of the imagination.
