Definitely. AWS wouldn't exist without in its current format, or maybe even at all, if it wasn't for throwing tons of potential profit into scaling it (and continually reducing cost to customers). Now, it's the engine that's fueling much of the expansion in the last decade.
Another point worth considering is Amazon did not build the delivery network because it reduced dependency/cost, it did it because those carriers could not operate at Amazon scale. It's the same reason AWS actually exists and why they do things like build their own applicant tracking system and BI platform from scratch.
