I thought I had an oil leak in this thing lately. I noticed it after a trip the other week that the tailgate had some kind of oily residue on it. Turns out it ended up being the rear diff leaking pretty substantially out of nowhere. I finally figured out the wet spot on the pavement wasn't coming from the front..and the diff cover was rusty as hell. Funny how on these trucks all the things that are supposed to hold a lubricant are themselves prone to corrosion (oil pan is also rusty and probably going to need to be replaced at some point).
Anyway - I bought a diff cover from Autozone and it came with one of those paper filters. Anyone ever replaced one of these? Should I use silicone sealant AND the gasket, or should I just use the silicon sealant "make your own gasket" shit? Right now I have the paper one on there but I don't know how long that will hold up by itself.
