That seems dumb if it is just a new version as you describe with the same basic functions. But you kind of shot yourself in the foot on this one. Just say yes and learn as you go. If it's just a "refresh" update you should have no problem.
The real mistake was talking to someone like that in the first place. The common theme seems to be putting these conversations on rails. She very specifically asked what version of Java my current project was using and not if I knew how to work with 1.8. I didn't think anything of it because like someone else said Lambdas are the only real "new" thing and it's just a shorthand way to do something you already could. They're also a copy of JavaScript arrow functions which I've written 100s of at this point but she didn't bother asking about that.
I don't disagree with you though, I'm starting to think I either need to start stretching the truth or avoid talking about my last job all together.
