the thicker sidewall i use for my winters are nice for the GTI with all the potholes around here. i imagine they would be nicer for dirty auto-xes

ha, sadly that's probably truly how they're made.  

yeah aggressive winters are likely what i'll try to find.  dedicated rally tires are $$$ and not actually that good on our clay surfaces.  and of course winter tires will actually have some value as useful street tires for a few months.  looking hard at the Sumitomo Ice Edge and Uniroyal Tiger Paw Snow and Ice 3.  they have the 205/55 size i'm after, are cheap, and have nice big tread voids.
