Having worked in the court system for 10 years and the federal court system for 5 years, perjury can be a hard crime to prove. Conjecture and belief are one thing, but being able to prove that something is an overt lie AND being able to prove that the person that said it KNEW it was a lie when they said it, are two completely different things. I’ve seen numerous perjury cases fall apart because the person that made the accused false statement made it based on incorrect or incomplete information. It’s easier in drug cases or smaller scale cases, but when you get into big government conspiracies and such, it becomes an especially hard crime to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, especially with the vague and open ended way people word responses to grand jury’s and in trials.
