Being that I work closely with CBP at times... everyone "against" a wall need to look into the history of our border protections.
I think we need "something"... but IMHO reason is maybe 25% immigration, 25% drugs, and 50% long term "help" to the under funded and under manned agents down there... looking for human trafficking, drugs, etc. Spend the money now and you can sustain the lower border patrol numbers for longer.
This was explained to me by a 2nd generation agent (dad was a Mexican American and CBP agent... so 2nd generation in two areas). 50 years ago the Rio Grande was the wall. It flowed faster and was wider, in more areas, for most of the year... so we (the US) didn't really need a wall. He blamed it on climate change and I added population growth... but its not the formidable river it once was. Sure people still risk their lives crossing it, but its much less risky.
He also had opinions on the northern border and the crazy issue that will become in the future. He thinks the more marijuana is legalized the more they will push for something along the northern border. its half a tax game and half a business game. "sticks and stems come from Mexico... the grey market real weed comes from Canada."
that "grey market" stuff will limit tax revenue and business profits in the states its legal. Que Rex and the taxation memes... BUT you sure as hell know the government wants their taxes... they already tax your booze, your cigarettes, your E-cigs, etc... they want their pot taxes.
The "wall"/immigration topic is extremely complex and related to several other issues... and they sure as hell aren't talked about.
