I tried not to get too technical. Long story, short: programmer recruitment is an utter shitshow especially for positions beyond entry level. It's pretty well known but I assumed it was mostly a west coast start-up/Google/Amazon/Microsoft thing but it appears to have spread quite far now.

This is so surprising.  The job market for tech talent is so tight that I'd hire you on the spot based on the personal projects you described.
They must somehow have the luxury of a ton of entry level devs from UVA,  with enough mids and seniors entrenched to properly mentor them.

Take it as a learning experience.  Algo questions are very common for any tech interview,  and a whiteboard exercise or two as well.   And even if your current job doesnt use them,  make sure you keep at least basic familiarity on the industry standard stuff like git, aws, jenkins, jira, etc.

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well. They have a REALLY high rating on Glassdoor and I doubt there's much real competition for them. Time to brush up on some leetcode exercises, put a few apps on GitHub and take this search nationwide.
