Product Management > Project Management

Yeah, project management is pretty terrible but it's a good way to get started and learn the ins/outs of stakeholder and resource management. I'd say the same about being a functional analyst - I've done it off and on over the years and it's helped me understand how to think like my customers. I did product management as I was transitioning out of analytics and liked it, but personally wanted a broader scope. My role is managing an actual program (read: service offering), so there's no project management as it's typically defined in the industry. I like it and can recommend that as a career goal if folks can swing it.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
