So. Things.
1: I "built" an AK. Centerfire was having a sale on DDI's leftover barreled receivers, basically guns that weren't finished when DDI went out of business. They were trying to make a 100% american made AK, and they were ok, but lots of them had an out of spec extractor that broke and pissed people off.
Started out like this:
I threw about 200 bucks of parts at it, and Now looks like this:

I'm a sucker for plum furniture, I think it looks great. I waffled back and forth over a refinish, since sitting in a tennesee warehouse it got a little rusted, but ultimately decided it's an AK after all, and a little patina was fine. I lubed the shit out of it to prevent additional corrosion and called it a day.

It's fun, but I still need to get the sights dialed in and get some kind of optic on it...probably gonna add a utilimak gas tube and throw a red dot up there. It's not like it's a 500y rifle or anything.
2: I joined Defense Distributed for a year today. Mostly because I'm fucking pissed off at everyone going all Henny-Penny about it. If you don't know, back in 2013 the State Department shut down Defense Distributed, which was hosting plans/code for 3D printed firearms. It's important to note that if you're not a prohibited person, that it's perfectly legal to manufacture your own firearms for personal use. If you can buy a gun, you can make one. Simple as that. And you don't need a 3d printer or a fancy CNC machine, you can make a "ghost gun" out of a shovel with basically 100 year old tools.
Anyway, State said "OMG YOU'RE EXPORTING MILITARY EQUIPMENT BY POSTING 1's AND 0's ON THE INTERNETS!" and shut 'em down. There was a lawsuit, and earlier this month, the State Department settled. Everyone lost their minds.
Ultimately, it isn't even a gun issue but a free speech one. If 1's and 0's are speech, then the government can't stop your speech. If 1's and 0's aren't speech, then, well...we have a much larger problem on our hands.
So anyway, I threw my 40 bucks at it, just to help with the War Chest. If you like guns OR free speech, you should too.
