This car looks exactly like that, the same wheels, bodykit, fog lamps, everything. So I think you are wrong on that chief, unless the "VR-4 look-a-like" package was available, which I'm not saying it wasn't.
To correct a few points I made before...
This car has 157,000 miles on it. Also it needs no transmission work as far as I can tell. After driving it all day I've concluded that at the most it needs shift bushings, and definitely a short-throw
Its fun as heck to drive, and it looks good in the driveway. In fact I am gazing at it right now. The steering is tight as hell too, quite a nice driver for the back roads. Here are some 0-60 times... [EDIT, these are 1/4 mile times as T pointed out.]
1991 3000GT SL- 16.4sec.
1995 3000GT VR-4 - 13.5sec.
