I tried the cheap vehicle thing with the Saab and it wasn't great. I also think dumping money into the GTI isn't going to be satisfying in the long run. Buy something new, a little bit nice, and do a few things here are there to make it your own.
If the GTI has been good, then buy the R and be done with it. If you must entertain other ideas, fuck off with the Q5 and the Allroad doesn't measure up to the F31. The F31 would also solve for having two different configurations in the family. It seems you guys are fine right now, but I think two Golfs/GTIs would be somewhat limiting. It has been decided!
tl;dr: F31. DONE.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
