Nice, I was going to suggest starting with the fuel filter. Splice in a good see-through one if you don't already have one. Preferably before any other filter you may have going to the engine. If nothing else you'll be able to tell if you're pulling fuel out of the tank when you're having issues and rule that out. You may need to replace your tank if you're pulling up rust flakes.
