I have had the opposite experience with counter offers. My previous company contacted me about one year after moving to my my current company for a roughly 20% salary increase. I brought it to my management, they counter offered for the same, I accepted and am still working there. I am also making roughly 30% more in the 4 years since and have been promoted internally, so I don’t feel like it really hurt my advancement with my new company or has been held against me. YMMV.
