If you still want a short throw after reading that, then just buy the kit. I don't think you need it to avoid punching the radio. (Or maybe I just got used to it and didn't realize I was doing it)

The one that came with the car is a boot/knob combo from an NB. I might just get a drawstring-type shift boot so it's not caught up on the collar.
I take it you've not driven one with the short throw kit?
