As the person who bought DJ's M3 and showed him the Carfax, I can answer that. The loss was reported in 2013, and they weren't worth a lot at that point. When we first started talking about the car, we both knew it had been repainted and the hood/fenders were not OEM, which after almost 20 years, isn't a huge surprise or a big deal, especially for a red car. It was only after we made a deal on the car and I sent the VIN to my "collectors" car insurance company to insure it at an agreed value (like several of my "special" cars), did they call me back with the report and a large adjustment on what they would insure it for. What's strange is that the Carfax doesn't show an accident report, only it was declared a total loss.
DJ was mislead by the previous owner, and I paid a little more than some others with "history", but what I got was a very nice car in great mechanical condition that I am not afraid to drive and put miles on at this point. It has a nice warm spot in the garage and will be enjoyed.
