That silver 540i doesn't look awful, and if you got it for like $3800 or so, it may not be terrible to you. Lauren's ended up kinda raggedy but hers also ended up like my Denali - needing literally everything fixed around the same time. The valley pan will leak and the job is annoying. Doubly so if you do it two or three times and it still leaks.
I'd also suggest looking at an E34 540i. They were ~280 hp and I think the M60 holds up better to time than the M62. Five-speed auto that's unremarkable or a six-speed manual that's really what you should have.
