 I have heard iOS 11 is currently terrible though so maybe iOS is going downhill as well.

What have you heard? It's been absolutely flawless for me and I have not heard a single complaint from any of my friends or family with iPhones. Battery life seemed to dip a little, but seems to be fine now. It's fast, smooth, and no bugs so far.
