It's not the hard launches that'll hurt your transfer case (within reason), it's when you are turning a corner and it engages on a dry road.
I use 4-Hi all the time in the winter, 4-LO is almost useless you are a rock-crawler/mudpitter. I think the only time I have legitimately used 4-LO is when Garrett ran off into a ditch at the bottom of Peter's driveway and I had to tow him out uphill in the snow. In order to manage traction since I run highway/tow tires, I just idled him out in 4-LO. Trying to use throttle just blew big plumes of snow/diesel
