I'm curious to hear the NTSB findings, sounds like it'll be a week or two before anything is released. Very sad, though.
We were around the area all weekend but avoided downtown on Saturday. We checked in to our hotel around 3:00 and the front desk guy told us the entire thing had broken up around 1. It's amazing how a small group (of mostly out-of-towners) can transform a part of a city on such a large scale. For those who were at JMU for Springfest in 2010, it felt like that. Absolute chaos, contained to a few blocks, with complete normalcy everywhere else. Given where we were all weekend, you'd have no idea what happened.
Maeng and Jenn took us to brunch on the downtown mall Sunday morning and most of the restaurants/shops had signage up with thoughtful quotes. Many restaurants were donating proceeds to help those affected by the violence. The "free speech" chalkboard wall had some great things written on it. Charlottesville is not a violent, mean-spirited place and it was good to see the "real" side of things Sunday.
I'm all for free speech, and can almost-kinda-sorta see why some people don't want these statues removed. But "peacefully assemble" in the first amendment is different from "run 20 people down with a Dodge Challenger."
Trump's response was the fucking worst.
