Odd, I've done it in multiple automatic cars and it will go into drive and continue.
Done it on my truck probably 10 times as I switch it to manual mode when I get stuck behind traffic going up a hill fully loaded.
With the ignition off? Every auto I've ever had won't let you shift out of P or N with the ignition off.
The GTI won't even let me turn the car off completely unless it's out of gear. It's actually saved my ass a few times, being sleep deprived due to an infant, because I've tried to remove the key with the car in D more than once.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
