There was a guy on the E90 and E82 forums that would put the annual map update online to download for free, and sell the activation code for $50. Far cheaper than the dealership would charge. My 128i was beyond any sort of free update period and I updated it from the original 2009 maps to 2015 at the time.
Routing was still a bit odd at times but I appreciated having the latest road info. BMW uses Navteq for their maps/routing which is the same as many other OEMs.
