Why? The reports of Nintendo's demise are largely exaggerated. If you bought their stock two years ago, you've nearly tripled your money.

They have still maintained a bump in valuation from that probably just due to Pokemon Go making the Nintendo name somewhat relevant in the press again, but that seems like more sheer dumb luck to me than corporate strateg-ery.
What I am saying is they have the building blocks in place to be really special and a contender to Sony and MS's throne. If they don't want to be a contender that is all well and good if you are a privately held company but you lose some of that decision to guide your corporate philosophy when other shareholder owners get involved
