That assumes their goal is to maximize profit. Knowing a few people who have worked at Nintendo, I get the impression that is absolutely not the case. They seem content creating niche products... kinda like private car companies that have small run production.

That's all well and good, but that is not usually what shareholders want to hear...and Nintendo is publicly traded. Even if they weren't focused on profits they should be focused on growth, and not meeting demand with your products doesn't help you significantly grow.

I think it's more of a situation of old-mindset execs that have been holding the organization back. The demand for their products is clearly there, if it wasn't then the company would really be in trouble. They just need to follow through on delivering enough supply of stuff that people want to buy and moving forward focus on actually getting developers to produce desirable titles for their newer systems.
