If you're on Android, it does everything you need in one place. If you're on iphone... well... tough shit.
I don't use Messenger or native SMS any more. My contacts are 50/50 on those two services, so makes life easy peasy. I have quite a few contacts whose # I've never obtained because the ease of Messenger.
