that's a great suggestion. you can also retrofit a brand new SVT suspension from Ford Motorsports for under $300 shipped.
its a non-interference engine in a kinda-light hatch with a great depreciation curve. i've seen quite a few in rally circles, probably because they're popular in europe too. you can haul 4 people + gear with the space and not shed a tear when it gets rock chipped and caked in garbage from motorsport duty.
