Miatas are wonderful cars, but I don't see them as being "the answer" for this. You have to either make sure the soft top is in good shape or that it comes with a hardtop. It's hard to get taller drivers to fit well in one when left largely stock (which this car will be). And you will either need a rollbar or hardtop or both to run it in rallycross - the SCCA Rally-X rules are pretty strict about it - and that is additional cost that a coupe or sedan would not incur.
What about a first-gen Focus? Those are cheap as dirt, run pretty well and seem to be well-liked in various motorsport circles.
