My father-in-law gifted me the Mauser his dad brought back from WWII. I have no idea what the story of the gun was, other than we're pretty sure he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and this came back with him. I met him a handful of times; the last time being before my wife and I backpacked France and Belgium when we went to an F1 race at Spa. I tried asking him a bunch of questions about his time in the war, but he didn't seem too keen on talking about it. The one thing I do remember is he said he didn't like Europe very much, but that was probably because he had to get there on a ship and he had Nazis shooting at him when he got there. He was sure we'd "have a better time" than he did.
My FIL had it inspected by a gunsmith in Vermont and it's supposed to be in good working order. It's stamped 79, so we think it's 7.9 mm, but I'll probably take it to a local shop to give it a once over before I put a round through it. I know pretty much nothing about arms like these, so it wouldn't hurt to have someone talk me through it.
