So out of goddam NOWHERE, the US Army decided this week to adopt the SIG P320 as the M17.

I'm a pretty big fan of the P320 and thought it was the only gun that actually met the requirements of the Modular Handgun System RFP. Still, I never thought that the army would ditch the M9, since it ain't like handguns get used a lot in the army anyhow.
Anyway, they did drop it, and the scuttlebutt is that the reason they did is the M17 will actually be cheaper than continuing to armor the existing M9's. There's a lot of reasons that this could be the case, but the big one is that the P320's "frame" looks like this:

And a Beretta 92's (M9) frame looks like this:

If either of those units becomes un-functional you have to, essentially, order a new "gun" from the manufacturer...but SIG's "fire control unit" is a lot less prone to wear...the frame (aka "grip module") slide, magazines, etc can all be ordered separately (which is maybe the reason for the IDIQ contract?) rather than buying a whole new unit because Lt. Shitheel bent his trying to open a beer with it.
Anyway, this is particularly good news for me, because the P320 was (is) on the shortlist for the "Family Pistol System" and this move by Uncle Sugar will ensure that the guns, parts, and accessories keep flowing.
