According to this table of class definitions for passenger cars from cars.com (created in 2003), "Mini: 1,500 ÔÇô 1,999 pounds curb weight" is the lightest class of passenger car.
I didn't find a table of mini passenger cars by year; but, I did find a collection of web pages with crash-test ratings for mini passenger cars for 1993-2004. The URLs for these pages are of the form "http://www.nhtsa.com/NCAP/Cars/YYYYMini.html", where YYYY is a place-holder for the four-digit year. (Note: The cars tested in a given year may be a proper subset of the cars sold in that year.)
I propose using a '89-'93 Suzuki Swift (curb weight: 1610 lbs).
