You'll get used to drowning out the noise of other people at the range. I finally went back after a good 6+ years of not shooting at all and it took me 50 rounds to relax and just focus on breathin' and shootin'.
If you want something that you can learn on, and use for home defense, and potentially carry with a CCP in the future the XDS and M&P Shield are good options.
If you really just want something to practice shooting get something .22LR, the ammo is infinitely cheaper, with a 9mm or .45 you'll end up spending more on rounds than the firearm if you actually go to the range frequently.
