Ahh, gotcha. That would make sense, if it over-pressurizes a little bit then maybe it's venting out the cap. Sounds very BMW-esque 
Given you say it warms up and has heat all within normal timing, I would suspect it's just the cap to start. I feel like a bad thermostat would make itself more evident in fluctuating engine temp, which you say isn't really happening outside of normal values.
