Because of how much our society and world has changed, we need more options now for candidates of different political ideologies. Gary Johnson had less than 1% of the popular vote in 2012 and this time around tripled that to 3%. It's important to look toward the long term and not just the next four years; if an Independent candidate can be legitimized at 5%, and they are allowed to take place in the major debates and get press attention, people will finally start to vote how they feel they really want to vote and not feel like they are throwing it away. If that happens, for a good candidate those independent percentages should grow dramatically. The hope is, a President who doesn't lean too far to one side will be able to better work with the Senate and Congress majorities. All of that takes time and takes people stepping up and making the change happen that they want (instead of just talking about it)

Didn't support him as he is a little air headed but I feel like there needs to be more than a two party vote system so people can be forced to actually research the candidate instead of just voting party lines like most general America. For example richmond mayor and any other positions besides congress is labeled as independent on the ballot. Made me actually look at the candidates still running before I voted...
