If you compare them side by side the M Leather actually feels thinner/softer than the E46 non-M stuff. The non-Ms have a really noticeable texture to them, and the "Nappa" leather on the Ms is smoother and softer. It worked out well to swap the E46 M seats into my car because the texture is a nearly perfect match for the stock leather on my back seat.
