For what you're looking to spend, skip the front shock. They're pretty terrible on bikes under $2000+. You wont notice it for city riding anyways. Most of the big brands (giant, cdale, trek, specialized, etc) sell more or less the same bikes at the same price, so if you've got a shop thats local to you go there first. Between now and the end of the year is when things go on sale.
