I really think it's going to be a love it or hate it kind of thing. Personally Destiny and similar games have zero appeal to me, so we're probably on dramatically different gaming wavelengths.
Think of it like a gigantic, much more beautiful version of Minecraft, except you can't build anything, you're just constantly drifting through the galaxy. I know one of the original goals of the game was to have a settling/city building aspect to it in addition to the exploration, mining and trading, but the challenge of just getting the full-scale procedural universe right was so great they just had to bin that part of the game.
I am really curious to see if there will be a patch/DLC, or just a sequel that takes the same environment, adds the building/crafting element and a better mapping system to allow players to build cities and interact with each other in them.
I do wish they had included some sort of map that shows your progress across the universe because its just hard to get a sense of scale of what you're doing. I've jumped maybe 4 star systems from my starting point and I literally could not get back to where I started if you gave me a million years to look for it. The "galaxy map" is like an interactive version of the night sky, all you can do is pick a star and warp to it, the only real indication of its location is the distance from the center of the universe. I started about ~179,820 lightyears out and I've whittled it down to about 179,790.
