I do agree with that. I would never buy something new and take that hit. Retirement is important and I'm assuming you're saving for the down payment for your house. I'm thinking about buying a slum townhouse instead of renting for 3 years to make some money. Real estate is an amazing investment if you can do it, and do it right.
